How this price of concrete calculator works

This concrete cost calculator helps you estimate how much a slab, patio, driveway, shed pad, or walkway may cost before calling suppliers. You enter your slab dimensions, choose your expected concrete price per cubic yard, and include common add-ons such as delivery, pump truck fees, labor, and tax. The tool calculates required volume and total cost in seconds.

For homeowners and small contractors, one of the biggest budget surprises is ordering too little concrete or forgetting non-material charges. This estimator is designed to reduce that risk by adding a waste factor and letting you round your order to realistic supplier increments.

Concrete volume formula used

The calculator follows standard industry math:

  • Volume (ft³) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Thickness (in ÷ 12)
  • Volume (yd³) = Volume (ft³) ÷ 27
  • Volume with waste = Volume (yd³) × (1 + waste %)
  • Material cost = Ordered volume × price per cubic yard
  • Total estimate = Material + delivery + pump + labor + tax

Because concrete is time-sensitive and difficult to return, ordering slightly extra is usually smarter than running short during a pour.

What drives the price of concrete?

1) Local ready-mix pricing

Concrete prices vary by city, season, and demand. In many markets, a standard mix might range roughly from $125 to $190 per cubic yard, but premium mixes, fiber reinforcement, and additives can increase the rate.

2) Delivery and short-load fees

Even small jobs can have fixed trucking costs. If your order is below a supplier's minimum load, short-load charges can increase per-yard cost significantly.

3) Pumping and site access

If a truck cannot back close to your forms, you may need a line pump or boom pump. Pump fees can quickly become one of the largest non-material charges on tight-access projects.

4) Labor and finishing

Material may be only part of the budget. Formwork, placing, screeding, bull floating, edging, troweling, joints, and curing all add labor costs.

5) Thickness and reinforcement

A 4-inch patio and a 6-inch driveway use very different volumes. Rebar or wire mesh also increases total cost but may improve performance and lifespan when specified correctly.

Quick example estimate

Suppose you're pouring a 20 ft × 14 ft patio at 4 inches thick, with 10% waste, $155 per yard concrete, $75 delivery, and no pump or labor included:

  • Base volume = 20 × 14 × (4/12) = 93.33 ft³
  • In cubic yards = 93.33 ÷ 27 = 3.46 yd³
  • With 10% waste = 3.80 yd³
  • Rounded to nearest 0.5 yd³ = 4.0 yd³
  • Material = 4.0 × $155 = $620
  • Total before tax = $620 + $75 = $695

That kind of quick breakdown helps you compare suppliers and avoid under-ordering.

Tips to reduce concrete project cost

  • Measure carefully: Small dimension errors can change volume and material cost.
  • Coordinate timing: Have forms, crew, and tools ready to avoid standby charges.
  • Ask about mix options: Match PSI and slump requirements to the job, not beyond it.
  • Batch nearby jobs: If possible, combine pours to reduce delivery overhead per yard.
  • Plan access: Better truck access can eliminate or reduce pump fees.

Ready-mix vs bagged concrete

For very small repairs, bagged concrete can be practical. But for slabs, driveways, and larger pads, ready-mix is usually faster, more consistent, and often cheaper per cubic yard once labor/time is considered. This calculator is primarily intended for ready-mix estimating.

Important estimating notes

This tool gives a planning estimate, not a binding quote. Final pricing depends on your supplier, mix design, minimum order rules, fuel surcharges, weekend scheduling, and local tax requirements. Always confirm with your concrete plant and contractor before purchase.

If you want an even tighter budget, request line-item quotes for concrete, reinforcement, sub-base prep, finishing, saw-cut joints, sealers, and cleanup separately.
