HRA / Rent Allowance Calculator
Enter your salary and rent details to estimate your HRA exemption and taxable HRA (India income tax method).
Salary for HRA = Basic Salary + Dearness Allowance (if it forms part of retirement benefits).
What is a rent allowance calculator?
A rent allowance calculator helps salaried employees estimate how much of their House Rent Allowance (HRA) can be claimed as tax-exempt. If you receive HRA from your employer and live in rented accommodation, you may be eligible for exemption under income tax rules.
This tool saves time by applying the standard HRA exemption formula automatically and giving you a clear breakdown.
How HRA exemption is calculated
HRA exemption is the minimum of these three values:
- Actual HRA received from employer
- Rent paid minus 10% of salary
- 50% of salary (metro) or 40% of salary (non-metro)
Exempt HRA = Min[ Actual HRA, (Rent Paid − 10% of Salary), (50%/40% of Salary) ]
Taxable HRA = Actual HRA − Exempt HRA
What counts as salary here?
For HRA exemption, salary is generally considered as Basic + DA (where DA forms part of retirement benefits). This calculator follows that structure so you can quickly estimate your eligibility.
Step-by-step example
Suppose your monthly details are:
- Basic: ₹50,000
- DA: ₹5,000
- HRA received: ₹20,000
- Rent paid: ₹22,000
- City: Metro
- Months: 12
Annual salary for HRA = (50,000 + 5,000) × 12 = ₹6,60,000
Annual HRA received = 20,000 × 12 = ₹2,40,000
Rent minus 10% of salary = (22,000 × 12) − 10% of 6,60,000 = ₹2,64,000 − ₹66,000 = ₹1,98,000
50% of salary (metro) = ₹3,30,000
Exempt HRA = minimum of (₹2,40,000, ₹1,98,000, ₹3,30,000) = ₹1,98,000
Taxable HRA = ₹2,40,000 − ₹1,98,000 = ₹42,000
How to use this calculator correctly
1) Enter monthly amounts accurately
Use your payslip values for Basic, DA, and HRA. Enter actual rent paid to landlord.
2) Choose the right city category
Metro cities typically include Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. If your rented home is outside these, select non-metro.
3) Select valid number of months
If you paid rent only for part of the year, set months accordingly (for example, 8 months if you changed accommodation mid-year).
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using annual amount in a monthly field (or vice versa)
- Forgetting to adjust months when rent was not paid for full year
- Selecting wrong city type
- Assuming full HRA is always exempt
