Revenue VRT Calculator (Ireland)
Estimate your Vehicle Registration Tax using OMSP, CO2 band, NOx levy, and optional relief.
For Category A passenger cars only. This is an estimate and not an official Revenue assessment.
How to use this Revenue VRT calculator in Ireland
If you are importing a car into Ireland or registering a vehicle for the first time, VRT can be one of the biggest costs. This page gives you a practical estimator so you can budget before booking your NCTS appointment.
To get the best estimate, use the same values Revenue will use:
- OMSP (Open Market Selling Price) as assessed in Ireland
- WLTP CO2 emissions in grams per kilometre
- NOx emissions in mg/km from the vehicle documentation
- Any approved relief that might apply to your registration
How VRT is calculated (simplified)
1) CO2-based VRT charge
A percentage rate is selected based on the car’s WLTP CO2 emissions band. That rate is then applied to OMSP.
Formula: CO2 VRT = OMSP × CO2 rate
2) NOx levy
A separate NOx amount is added using stepped rates:
- First 60 mg/km at €5 per mg
- Next 40 mg/km at €15 per mg
- Any remaining amount at €25 per mg
The levy is then capped (higher cap for diesel, lower cap for non-diesel) in this estimator.
3) Reliefs and reductions
If you qualify for a Revenue relief or reduction, it can reduce the final payable amount. Enter that as an optional value in the calculator.
CO2 bands used by this estimator
The calculator uses a commonly referenced Category A CO2 table:
| WLTP CO2 Band (g/km) | VRT Rate |
|---|---|
| 0–50 | 7% |
| 51–80 | 9% |
| 81–85 | 9.75% |
| 86–90 | 10.5% |
| 91–95 | 11.25% |
| 96–100 | 12% |
| 101–105 | 12.25% |
| 106–110 | 12.5% |
| 111–115 | 13.5% |
| 116–120 | 15.25% |
| 121–125 | 16.75% |
| 126–130 | 18.5% |
| 131–135 | 19.25% |
| 136–140 | 20% |
| 141–145 | 24% |
| 146–150 | 28% |
| 151–155 | 32% |
| 156–170 | 36% |
| 171–190 | 41% |
| 191+ | 50% |
Example calculation
Suppose your imported car has:
- OMSP: €30,000
- CO2: 118 g/km (15.25% band)
- NOx: 45 mg/km
- Relief: €0
CO2 VRT = €30,000 × 15.25% = €4,575. NOx levy = 45 × €5 = €225. Estimated total = €4,800.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using purchase price instead of OMSP
- Using NEDC figures instead of WLTP CO2
- Forgetting NOx levy on top of CO2 VRT
- Assuming relief applies automatically without eligibility
- Not checking Revenue updates before registration day
What to prepare before your VRT appointment
- Vehicle purchase invoice and proof of payment
- Foreign registration certificate (logbook)
- Proof of identity and address
- Evidence of date of entry into the State
- Technical data showing WLTP CO2 and NOx values
Final note
This revenue vrt calculator ireland tool is designed for planning, budgeting, and quick comparisons between vehicles. It is not tax advice and does not replace an official Revenue or NCTS determination. Always verify current rates, caps, and relief rules before paying VRT.
