Estimate Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT)

Use this Revenue-style VRT calculator to estimate tax for a passenger vehicle using OMSP, CO2 and NOx values.

For guidance only. Actual VRT from Revenue can vary based on vehicle category, valuation adjustments, and current legislation.

What this Revenue VRT calculator does

If you are importing a car, one of the biggest unknowns is the final Vehicle Registration Tax amount. This calculator gives you a quick estimate by combining three core pieces: the OMSP (Open Market Selling Price), the applicable CO2 VRT rate, and the NOx levy.

In plain terms, you start with a percentage of OMSP based on emissions, then add a NOx-based charge, and finally subtract any relief you may qualify for. The tool is designed to help you budget earlier and avoid last-minute surprises.

How VRT is usually built up

1) CO2-based VRT charge

The largest component is often the CO2-based VRT portion. Higher CO2 emissions generally move the vehicle into a higher percentage band.

CO2 (g/km) Rate on OMSP
0–507%
51–809%
81–909.75%
91–10010.5%
101–11011.25%
111–12012.25%
121–13013.5%
131–14015.25%
141–15516.75%
156–17018.5%
171–19022.5%
191+37%

2) NOx levy

The NOx portion is charged per mg/km and uses step rates. This calculator applies:

  • Petrol/other: first 60 mg at €5, next 40 mg at €15, remainder at €25
  • Diesel: first 40 mg at €5, next 40 mg at €15, remainder at €25
  • Optional NOx cap of €4,850 (enabled by default)

3) Reliefs and minimum charge

If you have an eligible relief (for example, policy-based reductions available for specific vehicle types/time periods), enter it in euro. The calculator subtracts it from the gross amount, then applies the optional €125 minimum VRT rule.

How to use this calculator accurately

  • Use WLTP CO2 and NOx values from official documentation (not estimates from ads).
  • Enter a realistic OMSP, not just the purchase price abroad.
  • Check whether your vehicle qualifies for any temporary reliefs before filing.
  • Compare this estimate with official Revenue guidance before committing to purchase.

Example scenario

Suppose a vehicle has OMSP €25,000, CO2 of 120 g/km, NOx of 45 mg/km, and petrol fuel type:

  • CO2 rate at 120 g/km = 12.25%
  • CO2 VRT = €25,000 × 12.25% = €3,062.50
  • NOx levy (first 45 mg for petrol tiers) = €225.00
  • Estimated total before reliefs = €3,287.50

Final note

A calculator is best for planning, not final legal confirmation. Revenue calculations can include category-specific rules and updates over time. Still, this tool gives you a strong first-pass estimate so you can make better, faster decisions.
