UK Road Tax (VED) Car Calculator
Estimate your annual car road tax using registration year, CO₂ emissions, fuel type, and list price.
How this road tax car calculator works
This tool estimates UK Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), often called road tax, based on the most common factors used for private cars. It is designed to give you a fast planning number before you buy, lease, or budget for a vehicle.
The calculator uses two broad systems:
- Cars first registered from 2017 onward: first-year rate based on CO₂ emissions, then a standard annual rate (plus a possible expensive car supplement).
- Cars first registered before 2017: banded annual rates primarily based on CO₂ emissions.
What affects your road tax amount
1) First registration date
The registration year determines which tax structure applies. This is one of the biggest variables in road tax calculations.
2) CO₂ emissions
Higher emissions usually mean higher tax, especially for first-year rates on newer cars. Check your emissions value on the V5C logbook or manufacturer specification sheet.
3) Fuel type
Petrol, diesel, alternative fuel, and electric vehicles can have different rate treatment. In recent years, electric vehicle taxation has changed, so always verify current official rates.
4) Vehicle list price
If a car had a high original list price, an extra supplement may apply for a limited number of years after first registration. This can materially increase annual cost.
How to use the calculator
- Enter your car’s first registration year.
- Enter the official CO₂ emissions (g/km).
- Select the correct fuel type.
- Add the car’s original list price in pounds.
- Click Calculate Road Tax to see your estimate.
Example scenarios
Example A: Efficient petrol hatchback
A recently registered petrol hatchback with modest emissions may have a moderate first-year tax, then move to the standard annual rate afterward.
Example B: Premium SUV over £40,000 list price
Even if emissions are average, the expensive car supplement can push annual road tax significantly higher during the qualifying period.
Example C: Older pre-2017 vehicle
For many older cars, CO₂ band placement drives the yearly amount. Small changes in emissions can move the car into a different tax band.
Road tax budgeting tips
- Check VED before buying a car, not after.
- Compare similar models with different CO₂ outputs.
- Factor road tax into total ownership cost with insurance, fuel, servicing, and depreciation.
- If buying used, verify first registration date and exact trim-level emissions.
- Use official DVLA/GOV.UK tools for final confirmation before payment.
