What this road tax IE calculator does

This calculator helps you estimate Irish motor tax (often called road tax) for private cars. In Ireland, the amount you pay each year can depend on when the vehicle was first registered and how it is classified. Most modern cars are taxed by CO2 emissions, while many older cars are taxed by engine size.

The tool above gives a quick estimate for annual, six-month, or three-month payment periods. It is designed for clarity and speed, so you can budget before renewing tax online or at a motor tax office.

Important: Tax rules can change in each Budget cycle. Commercial vehicles, motorcycles, imports, and special categories may use different tables than those shown here.

Which tax system applies to your car in Ireland?

1) CO2-based tax (most cars registered from 1 July 2008 onward)

If your car falls into the emissions system, your annual tax is linked to grams of CO2 per kilometre. Lower-emission cars generally pay less than higher-emission vehicles.

2) Engine-size tax (many cars registered before 1 July 2008)

Older vehicles are usually taxed by engine capacity in cubic centimetres (cc). A larger engine generally means a higher annual tax charge.

3) Electric vehicle rate

Fully electric private cars generally qualify for a reduced flat motor tax rate. In this estimator, that flat annual amount is applied directly.

Budgeting tips for motor tax in Ireland

Pay annually when possible

Quarterly and half-year options are useful for cash flow, but they often cost more over the year. If your budget allows, annual payment can reduce overall cost.

Check details before renewal

Errors in registration date, CO2 figure, or vehicle class can lead to wrong estimates. Always verify your Vehicle Registration Certificate details first.

Know other ownership costs

Road tax is only one part of ownership. Also plan for insurance, NCT/maintenance, servicing, tyres, fuel/charging, and depreciation.
