How this Spain salary tax calculator works

This page gives you a practical estimate of your net salary in Spain. It combines the two main employee deductions:

  • Social Security contributions (Seguridad Social), paid as a percentage of your contribution base.
  • IRPF income tax, calculated with progressive tax bands and adjusted using a simple regional factor.

The result is ideal for planning, budgeting, and comparing offers. It is especially useful if you are moving to Spain, negotiating a new contract, or trying to convert gross salary to monthly take-home pay.

What is deducted from salary in Spain?

1) Employee Social Security

Most employees contribute a fixed percentage for common contingencies, unemployment, training, and intergenerational equity. In real payroll, this follows official contribution bases and legal caps updated yearly. This calculator applies a single practical rate by contract type and a salary cap to keep the estimate realistic.

2) IRPF (Personal Income Tax)

IRPF is progressive: higher slices of taxable income are taxed at higher rates. A personal allowance reduces the taxable base, and allowances can increase with age and dependent children. Autonomous communities can slightly increase or reduce effective tax pressure, which is why this calculator includes a regional selector.

Formula used in the calculator

At a high level, we estimate:

  • Taxable income = Gross salary − Employee Social Security − Personal allowance
  • Estimated IRPF = Progressive tax bands applied to taxable income
  • Net annual salary = Gross salary − Social Security − IRPF
  • Net monthly salary = Net annual salary ÷ Number of payments (12 or 14)

Important assumptions and limitations

Like every online Spain tax calculator, this one simplifies reality. Your actual payroll withholding can differ due to special regimes, disability status, pension contributions, in-kind compensation, union fees, deductible expenses, bonuses, and employer-specific payroll settings.

  • Regional IRPF differences are modeled with an approximate factor.
  • Social Security uses simplified employee rates and an annual contribution cap.
  • This tool is for educational and planning purposes, not legal or tax advice.

How to improve your net salary in Spain (legally)

Negotiate total compensation, not just gross base pay

Sometimes two job offers with the same gross salary produce different net outcomes if they include flexible benefits or pension contributions. Ask for a full compensation breakdown.

Review your withholding and family situation

If your family status changes (marriage, children, dependents), updating payroll data can improve withholding accuracy and reduce end-of-year surprises.

Choose payment structure carefully

12 vs 14 payments does not change annual net by itself, but it changes cash flow. If you prefer steadier monthly income, 12 payments may feel easier to manage.

Quick FAQ

Is this an official Agencia Tributaria calculator?

No. It is an independent estimator designed for speed and clarity.

Can I use this for freelancing (autónomo)?

Not directly. Autónomo taxes and social contributions follow different rules and should be calculated separately.

Why is my payslip different?

Company payroll systems apply exact legal tables, contribution groups, prorations, and individual circumstances. Treat this as a close approximation, not a final settlement.
