Spanish Road Tax (IVTM) Calculator
Use this tool to estimate your annual Impuesto sobre Vehículos de Tracción Mecánica (IVTM), often called road tax or impuesto de circulación. Select your vehicle type, municipality multiplier, and fuel category to get a fast estimate.
What is Spanish road tax (IVTM)?
The Spanish road tax is formally called IVTM — Impuesto sobre Vehículos de Tracción Mecánica. It is a municipal tax paid by owners of registered vehicles in Spain. Even though people often call it “road tax,” it is collected locally by your Ayuntamiento (town hall), not as a flat national fee.
Because it is municipal, two cars with similar specs can pay very different amounts if they are registered in different municipalities. The base tariff is set nationally, but local councils can apply multipliers and create bonus schemes for electric, hybrid, or historic vehicles.
How this calculator works
This calculator estimates your annual tax in four simple steps:
- Step 1: Identify the legal base amount from your vehicle category (car, motorcycle, truck, etc.).
- Step 2: Apply your selected municipality multiplier (for example 1.40 or 1.80).
- Step 3: Apply environmental or historic discounts (if any).
- Step 4: Optionally prorate for first-year registration by quarter.
Results are displayed with a full breakdown so you can see exactly how the estimate is produced.

Important factors that change your final bill
1) Municipality coefficient
Your council can apply a coefficient that meaningfully changes cost. A base amount of €71.94 can become over €140 in high-coefficient locations.
2) Eco bonuses and exemptions
Many municipalities offer incentives for cleaner vehicles. Common examples include partial reductions for hybrids and larger reductions for EVs. The exact percentage and duration vary by local ordinance.
3) Historic vehicles
Historic/classic vehicles may qualify for major reductions or full exemption once officially recognized under municipal and national requirements.
4) First-year proration
On first registration, IVTM can be prorated by quarter depending on when the vehicle enters the register. This calculator includes a quarter-based estimate to help plan first-year costs.
Practical tips before you pay
- Check your SUMA / ORA / local tax authority portal for the exact municipal ordinance.
- Confirm whether your vehicle has a valid environmental label and bonus eligibility.
- If you changed address recently, verify where the vehicle is officially registered.
- Keep an eye on payment windows to avoid surcharges and enforcement fees.
