VA Combined Rating Calculator
Add each service-connected disability percentage, then calculate your estimated combined VA rating using the "whole person" method.
Your Ratings
How this VA disability calculator works
The Department of Veterans Affairs does not add percentages like normal math. Instead, it uses a "whole person" approach. Each new rating is applied to whatever healthy percentage remains after previous ratings are accounted for.
That is why two ratings like 50% and 30% do not equal 80% in most cases. Under VA math, the result is usually lower because the second percentage applies to the remaining non-disabled portion, not the original 100%.
VA combined rating formula (plain English)
Step 1: Start with your highest rating
Your largest service-connected rating is applied first. This has the biggest impact on the final result.
Step 2: Apply each additional rating to the remainder
If you are 50% disabled, the VA considers 50% of the "whole person" remaining. A second 30% rating is then 30% of the remaining 50, which adds 15 points (not 30 full points).
Step 3: Round to a final schedular rating
After combining all ratings, the result is rounded to the nearest 10% for compensation purposes. For example:
- 74% rounds to 70%
- 75% rounds to 80%
- 95% rounds to 100%
Example calculation
Suppose a veteran has ratings of 50%, 30%, and 20%:
- Start at 50%
- Apply 30% to the remaining 50% healthy portion: +15 → 65%
- Apply 20% to the remaining 35% healthy portion: +7 → 72%
- Final VA rounded rating: 70%
The calculator above automates this and shows each step in a table so you can verify the math.
Common mistakes veterans make
- Adding disability percentages directly instead of using the whole person method.
- Forgetting to include secondary conditions that may be separately compensable.
- Ignoring the bilateral factor when applicable to paired extremities.
- Assuming a high combined number automatically guarantees 100% without reviewing all rating decisions.
What this tool includes (and does not include)
Included
- Multiple disability percentages
- Automatic sorting from highest to lowest
- Step-by-step breakdown of combined math
- Final rounding to nearest 10%
Not fully included
- Advanced bilateral factor automation
- Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) logic
- TDIU approval criteria or effective date analysis
- Current monthly compensation amounts by dependency status
Tips before filing or appealing
If your estimate is close to a higher bracket, focus on complete medical evidence and nexus support. A well-documented claim can make a major difference in service connection, percentage level, and effective date.
Many veterans also benefit from discussing their case with an accredited VSO, claims agent, or VA-accredited attorney when preparing an appeal or supplemental claim.
Quick FAQ
Is this an official VA calculator?
No. This is an educational estimator based on standard combined-rating math.
Why is my result different from what I expected?
Most differences come from VA rounding rules, rating order, bilateral factor details, or conditions not yet service connected.
Can I reach 100% without a single 100% condition?
Yes. Multiple ratings can combine to 100% under VA math, depending on your total combined value and rounding outcome.
