The 12-animal cycle
The Chinese zodiac rotates through twelve animals in this order:

The five elements and Yin/Yang

This is why two people can both be Dragons yet feel very different in temperament. A Wood Dragon and a Metal Dragon share core Dragon traits, but the element layer adds nuance.
About January and February birthdays
The biggest source of confusion in Chinese horoscope calculators is early-year birthdays. Lunar New Year shifts each year, usually between late January and mid-February. If you were born during that window, your zodiac year may be the previous animal.
