Suppose you have 4 cubic yards of mulch, spread in a strip 2 feet wide and 0.5 feet deep.
- Linear yards = (4 × 9) ÷ (2 × 0.5) = 36 yards
- So your material can fill a strip about 36 yards long.
Example B: Concrete trench
You ordered 2 cubic yards of concrete for a trench that is 1 foot wide and 1 foot deep.
- Linear yards = (2 × 9) ÷ (1 × 1) = 18 yards
- That is 54 linear feet.
