How this Danish income tax calculator works
Denmark has a layered income tax system. Instead of one single rate, your annual tax is made up of multiple parts: labour market contribution, municipal tax, state tax, and optionally church tax. This calculator gives you a clean, adjustable estimate so you can quickly understand your expected net pay.
The calculator is intentionally transparent. Every major input is editable, so you can test scenarios like moving municipality, earning a higher salary, or changing your top tax exposure.
What is included in the estimate
- AM-bidrag (labour market contribution): calculated at 8% of gross salary.
- Municipal tax: based on taxable income after selected deductions.
- Church tax: optional, only if you are a church member.
- State bottom tax: applied to taxable income.
- State top tax: applied to income above your selected threshold.
Key simplifications
This is not a full legal tax filing engine. It does not include every credit, commuting allowance, pension optimization case, stock-income rules, or international tax treaty detail. Use it for planning and budgeting—not as a replacement for your final tax assessment from Skattestyrelsen.
Input guide (quick reference)
1) Annual gross salary
Enter your expected annual salary before tax. If you are paid monthly, multiply your monthly gross by 12.
2) Municipal and church rates
Municipal tax differs by municipality. Church tax applies only if you are registered as a member.
3) Personal allowance and employment deduction
The model subtracts your chosen allowance and employment deduction before most income taxes are computed. This can materially affect your effective tax rate at lower and middle incomes.
4) Top tax threshold
If your income after AM contribution is above this threshold, top tax is calculated on the excess amount only.
Example scenario
Suppose your annual gross salary is DKK 550,000 with a municipal tax rate of 24.9% and church tax of 0.7%. The calculator will:
- Subtract 8% AM-bidrag first.
- Apply deductions to estimate taxable income.
- Compute municipal, church, and state bottom taxes.
- Check whether top tax is triggered.
- Return annual and monthly net income estimates.
Ways to reduce your effective tax burden (legally)
- Use pension contributions strategically.
- Confirm your annual deductions are registered correctly on your preliminary income assessment.
- Track deductible work-related expenses where applicable.
- Review withholding settings if your income changes significantly during the year.
FAQ
Is this calculator official?
No. It is an educational estimator, not an official SKAT calculator.
Can I use this for freelancing income?
You can use it as a rough first pass, but self-employment often requires additional treatment for business expenses, VAT, and contribution structures.
Why is my actual payslip different?
Payroll systems include timing, withholding setup, pension schemes, holiday pay arrangements, and other personal factors. That can make monthly net salary differ from annual estimates.
