What is EV salary sacrifice?

EV salary sacrifice is a workplace benefit where you exchange part of your gross salary for the use of an electric vehicle. Because the deduction is made before income tax and National Insurance (NI), the reduction in take-home pay can be much lower than the headline lease cost.

For many employees, this makes electric motoring significantly more affordable than a private lease. Most schemes also include insurance, servicing, maintenance, and breakdown cover, which can simplify budgeting.

How this calculator works

This calculator estimates the monthly take-home impact using a simple framework:

  • Annual sacrifice = monthly sacrifice × 12
  • Tax saved = annual sacrifice × income tax rate
  • NI saved = annual sacrifice × NI rate
  • BIK tax due = (P11D value × BIK rate) × income tax rate
  • Net annual take-home impact = annual sacrifice − tax saved − NI saved + BIK tax due

It also shows an optional pension-adjusted view. If pension contributions are based on your post-sacrifice salary, contributions can be lower, which is an opportunity cost worth considering.

Inputs explained

1) Gross annual salary

Your current salary before deductions. This is used to estimate your marginal tax and NI rates if automatic mode is enabled.

2) Monthly salary sacrifice

The amount your employer deducts from gross pay each month for the EV package.

3) P11D value and BIK rate

Benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax is calculated on the P11D value and the government-set BIK percentage for the vehicle year. EV BIK rates are usually lower than petrol or diesel alternatives, which is a core reason salary sacrifice can be attractive.

4) Personal lease comparison

This optional field helps you compare salary sacrifice against an equivalent private lease quote.

Example interpretation

If your monthly sacrifice is £550, your gross annual sacrifice is £6,600. A higher-rate taxpayer may save substantial tax and NI on that amount. Even after adding BIK tax, net monthly impact can be much lower than £550. The comparison row in the results helps show potential monthly savings versus a private lease cost.

Things this quick model does not include

  • Scotland-specific tax bands (this model uses England/Wales/NI style bands in auto mode).
  • Employer pension design details (some employers protect pensionable pay, others do not).
  • Student loan, childcare, or other salary-linked deductions and benefits.
  • Early termination charges if you leave employment.
  • Changes in future tax policy, BIK percentages, or NI rates.

Final thoughts

Salary sacrifice can be one of the most cost-effective ways to drive an EV, especially for employees paying higher-rate tax. But the best decision depends on your tax position, employer policy, pension setup, and how long you expect to stay in role.

Use this calculator as a planning tool, then confirm final figures with your employer and scheme provider before committing.
