Gen 8 Catch Chance Calculator
Use this for standard wild encounters in Sword/Shield and other Gen 8-style catch mechanics. Enter your current battle state and get the estimated chance per throw.
Note: This tool assumes normal wild capture logic. Some special encounters, scripted battles, and certain raid contexts can use different rules.
How Gen 8 catch mechanics work
In Generation 8 games, every throw calculates an internal value based on the target’s base catch rate, current HP, max HP, ball bonus, and status condition. The lower the target’s HP and the stronger your ball/status bonuses, the better your odds. Legendary Pokémon often have very low catch rates (like 3), while early-route Pokémon usually have much higher values.
The practical takeaway is simple: weaken the target to low HP, apply sleep or freeze when possible, and choose the right ball for the situation. Even small multipliers stack quickly, which is why optimized catches feel dramatically easier than random throws.
Core formula used in this calculator
This page uses the standard Gen 8-style wild capture model:
If a ≥ 255, the catch is guaranteed. Otherwise, the game runs shake checks. This calculator converts those shake checks into a final percent chance per throw. If you enable critical capture, it also blends in the chance for a critical throw and applies the one-shake capture path.
Ball and status strategy
Best status effects
- Sleep / Freeze (2.5×): highest status bonus and best overall for difficult targets.
- Paralysis / Burn / Poison (1.5×): still very useful if sleep is unreliable.
- No status (1×): much lower odds on low catch-rate Pokémon.
Ball selection tips
- Quick Ball is excellent turn 1.
- Dusk Ball dominates in caves and nighttime encounters.
- Timer Ball becomes strong in long battles.
- Repeat Ball is great when you already own the species.
- Ultra Ball is the reliable default when no special condition applies.
When critical capture matters
Critical capture can significantly improve overall odds, especially when your Pokédex caught count is high and you have the Catching Charm. Instead of requiring the normal full shake sequence, a critical capture path effectively shortens the process to one shake check. On stubborn catches, this can be the difference between dozens of throws and a much faster success.
Example use case
Suppose you are trying to catch a low catch-rate target with an Ultra Ball at red HP and sleep. If your result is still under 15% per throw, switching to a context-optimized ball (such as Dusk Ball at night or Timer Ball late fight) can raise your chance much more than simply throwing additional Ultra Balls. That is exactly why this calculator is useful: it helps you pick the best tactical move before wasting resources.
Quick checklist for higher catch odds
- Reduce HP as close to 1 as safely possible.
- Apply sleep whenever available.
- Use conditional balls that match encounter context.
- Track turn count for Timer Ball value.
- Enable critical capture assumptions if your Pokédex progress is high.
Final notes
This calculator is designed for planning and probability estimation, not frame-perfect simulation of every special case in every title. Still, for normal Gen 8 wild encounters, it gives a strong real-world estimate of your chance per throw and expected number of throws. If you are shiny hunting, legendary hunting, or building a living dex, this should save both time and Poké Balls.
