How the Leaving Cert points system works
The CAO points system converts your Leaving Certificate grades into points for college entry. In most cases, the CAO counts your best six subjects from one sitting of the exam. This means every subject still matters, but your strongest six results are the ones that usually drive your final score.
Higher Level subjects carry more potential points than Ordinary Level subjects, and Foundation Level Maths has a smaller points scale. One of the most important rules to remember is the Higher Level Maths bonus: if you achieve H1 to H6 in Higher Level Maths, 25 extra points are added.
Quick reference points table

How to use this calculator effectively
- Enter all subjects you took, even if you think one grade is weak.
- Select the correct level for each subject before choosing grade.
- Mark only your Higher Level Maths row with the bonus checkbox.
- Double-check your entries before making course decisions.
Planning your course choices with confidence
Once you know your estimated points, compare them with recent course minimums. Keep in mind that course points can move year to year depending on demand, so think in ranges, not certainties. It is smart to include a mix of:
- Ambitious choices (slightly above your estimate)
- Realistic choices (around your estimate)
- Safe choices (comfortably below your estimate)
