How this likelihood of getting pregnant calculator works

This calculator gives a rough estimate of the chance of pregnancy based on a few major factors: age, cycle timing, number of unprotected sex acts, and contraceptive use. It predicts an ovulation day from your average cycle length and then estimates how close intercourse occurred to the fertile window.

Fertility is not perfectly predictable. Even with regular cycles and ideal timing, conception may not happen in a single cycle. Likewise, pregnancy can happen even when risk appears low. Think of this tool as a planning aid rather than a definitive answer.

Inputs and why they matter

1) Age

Age is one of the strongest predictors of monthly conception probability. In general, the average chance of conceiving per cycle is highest in the 20s and gradually declines through the 30s and 40s.

2) Cycle day of intercourse

Sperm can survive for several days in fertile cervical mucus, and the egg is usually viable for about 12 to 24 hours. Because of this, the highest probability usually occurs in the five days before ovulation and around ovulation day itself.

3) Number of unprotected acts

More unprotected sex acts in the fertile window generally increase the chance of conception in that cycle. The calculator combines repeated acts into a cumulative cycle estimate.

4) Contraceptive method

Birth control methods reduce pregnancy risk by varying amounts. Consistent, correct use typically lowers risk more than occasional or incorrect use. If emergency contraception was used quickly after sex, risk can be reduced further.

Understanding your fertile window

A common estimate is: ovulation ≈ cycle length − 14 days. For a 28-day cycle, ovulation is often near day 14. The fertile window is usually considered day ovulation minus 5 through ovulation plus 1.

  • Example: 28-day cycle → ovulation around day 14
  • Estimated fertile window: days 9 to 15
  • Highest relative likelihood: roughly days 12 to 14

Real cycles vary. Stress, travel, sleep changes, illness, and hormonal conditions can shift ovulation earlier or later.

How to interpret the result

Your result includes:

  • Estimated chance this cycle based on current entries
  • Estimated chance across multiple cycles if similar timing repeats
  • A low-to-high range to reflect normal biological uncertainty

A “low” number does not mean zero, and a “high” number does not mean guaranteed pregnancy.

If you are trying to conceive

  • Track cycles for several months to identify your personal pattern.
  • Have intercourse every 1–2 days during the fertile window.
  • Consider ovulation predictor kits and cervical mucus tracking.
  • Discuss prenatal vitamins (especially folic acid) with your clinician.

If you are trying to avoid pregnancy

  • Use reliable contraception consistently and correctly.
  • Do not rely only on cycle timing if avoiding pregnancy is critical.
  • After unprotected sex, consider emergency contraception as soon as possible.

When to seek medical advice

Talk with a healthcare professional if:

  • You are under 35 and have tried for 12 months without conception.
  • You are 35 or older and have tried for 6 months without conception.
  • Cycles are very irregular, absent, or unusually painful/heavy.
  • You have known reproductive health conditions, prior pelvic surgery, or recurrent pregnancy loss.

Important limitations

This calculator does not diagnose infertility, confirm ovulation, detect pregnancy, or account for every medical factor (such as sperm parameters, tubal factors, endocrine disorders, medications, and many others). For personalized care, use this estimate as a starting point and follow up with a qualified clinician.
