Common mistakes when calculating PPD

Using total headset resolution instead of per-eye resolution

Most specs list resolution per eye and sometimes total combined values. For accurate per-eye PPD, use per-eye numbers.

Mixing diagonal FOV with horizontal resolution

Always match dimensions correctly. Horizontal pixels must be divided by horizontal FOV, and vertical pixels by vertical FOV.

Treating manufacturer FOV as absolute

FOV can vary by face shape, eye relief, gasket thickness, and lens position. So your personal PPD may differ slightly from published estimates.

Example

Suppose a headset has 2064 horizontal pixels per eye and 110° horizontal FOV:

Horizontal PPD = 2064 ÷ 110 = 18.76

If vertical values are 2208 pixels and 96° FOV:

Vertical PPD = 2208 ÷ 96 = 23.00

Average PPD would be about 20.88, which is decent for general use and moderate text clarity.
